SEPA Direct Debit for recurring collections across Europe
Collect subscription, invoice and scheduled Euro payments through mandate-based, bank-to-bank SEPA Direct Debit.
Built for relationships, not just checkout
Card payments are optimised for the checkout moment. SEPA Direct Debit is different. It is built around an authorised customer mandate: once the mandate is in place, payments can be collected from the customer's bank account in line with the agreed terms, collection schedule and applicable scheme rules.
That makes it particularly useful where payments are recurring, invoice-based or scheduled in advance. Customers stop having to initiate every transfer manually, and finance teams get a more predictable collection process with less administrative follow-up.
- Subscription payments
- Recurring service fees
- Invoice collections
- Membership and account-based charges
- Scheduled Euro collections across the SEPA area
Improve your cashflow
Manual transfers put your collection dates in your customers' hands. Mandate-based collection puts them back in yours, so revenue arrives when the billing cycle says it should.
Get paid in days, not weeks
Collect agreed amounts in line with your billing cycle rather than waiting for customers to remember payment dates, enter bank details and make a transfer. Once the mandate is in place, collections initiate on schedule.
Stop chasing late payments
Fewer incorrect references, wrong amounts, missed payment dates and reminder emails. Collections follow the agreed schedule under the mandate, so your team spends less time on administrative follow-up and more on the work that matters.
Reduce failed payments
Bank-to-bank collection is not exposed to card expiry and reissue, two of the most common causes of failed recurring payments. A structured process for returns, retries and failed collections keeps recovery disciplined rather than ad hoc.
From mandate to settled funds
Follow a SEPA Direct Debit collection from the moment it is initiated to the moment it reconciles in your Euro account.

Built for the way you bill
Invoice cycles, subscriptions and memberships each collect differently. The mandate model supports all three.
Mandates, customer rights and doing it properly
A mandate is the customer’s authorisation for a business to collect payments from their bank account using SEPA Direct Debit. It sets out the customer’s consent, provides the basis for future collections, and should be clear, properly recorded and available for reference where required.
What a mandate establishes
- Who is authorised to collect the payment
- Which customer account may be debited
- The customer’s consent to the collection process
- The basis on which future payments may be collected
The mandate is central to SEPA Direct Debit. Without a valid mandate, a collection may be treated as unauthorised.
Clear customer rights
SEPA Direct Debit includes customer protections, and these rights are part of what makes the method trusted across Europe. Under the SEPA Core Direct Debit scheme, a payer may generally request a refund within eight weeks of the debit without giving a reason. Where a payment was not authorised, a refund request may be possible for a longer period under the scheme rules. Customers can also cancel a mandate or ask their bank to block future collections.
Why this matters for your business
Clear mandate wording, transparent communication and accurate payment records help customers understand what they are authorising, and help businesses operate the collection process responsibly. Controls still matter: your business needs a process for handling returns, refunds, cancellations and failed payments, and FinXP supports the operational side of each.
Collections remain subject to the applicable SEPA scheme rules, customer rights, mandate validity, banking processes and regulatory requirements.
Designed for predictable collection processes
SEPA Direct Debit reduces the operational friction that comes with manual bank transfers: incorrect references, wrong amounts, missed dates and repeated reminders.
Predictable collection cycles
Collect agreed amounts in line with billing cycles instead of waiting for customers to remember payment dates.
Less manual follow-up
Fewer incorrect references, wrong amounts and missed payment dates, and fewer reminder emails from your team.
Visibility of upcoming collections
A clearer view of expected payment flows, so finance can forecast and plan with more confidence.
Collection discipline
A structured, scheme-governed process that supports consistent and responsible collections at scale.

SEPA Direct Debit Basics for First-Time Users
SEPA Direct Debit lets a business collect payment directly from a customer's account, on a recurring or one-off basis, once the customer has authorised it. A normal transfer is initiated by the payer; Direct Debit is initiated by the business collecting the money.
It's the customer's formal authorisation for a business to collect payments from their account. It has to be stored and remain retrievable, because it's the evidence a collection was properly authorised if a dispute arises.
Under SDD Core (the consumer scheme), yes; the customer has a no-questions-asked refund right for up to 8 weeks after a collection, extending to 13 months for an unauthorised one.
SDD Core is for consumer collections and carries that automatic refund right. SDD B2B is for business-to-business collections, has no automatic refund right, and requires the payer's bank to verify the mandate before the first collection.
Returns and disputes are a routine, expected part of running Direct Debit collections, not an exceptional event. What matters is how quickly your provider can investigate and resolve them; directly, or through an extra sponsor layer.
Yes, customers must be given advance notice ("pre-notification") of the amount and date before the first collection, unless a shorter notice period has been specifically agreed with them.
It's the collective term for returns, refunds and disputed collections under SEPA Direct Debit; the exceptions that need active handling rather than a payment that simply settles.
Mandate records need to remain stored and retrievable for as long as they may be needed as evidence in a dispute, which, in practice, means keeping them for the life of the mandate and beyond.
Yes; SDD collections and SEPA Credit Transfers commonly run through the same provider and settle via the same underlying infrastructure, ideally reflected in a single consolidated ledger.
Ask whether SDD is processed directly or through a sponsor bank, how mandates are stored and tracked, and what the typical turnaround is for investigating a returned or disputed payment.
Yes. Customers can cancel a mandate at any time, either with the business collecting the payment or through their own bank, and they can instruct their bank to block future collections. FinXP explains the full cancellation process, including what to have ready, at the Cancel a SEPA Direct Debit page on this site.
